The ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Information Technology (120 Credits) provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, tools, and technologies that shape today’s digital world. Designed as the equivalent of Year 1 of a UK Bachelor’s degree, this qualification builds a strong academic and practical foundation for students entering the IT field.
Through a structured curriculum, learners develop core competencies in programming, database systems, networking, cybersecurity, software development, and digital communication. The program combines technical knowledge with essential analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling students to confidently navigate real-world computing environments.
Successful completion of Level 4 allows students to advance directly into Level 5 Diploma in IT or paving the way toward a full UK degree through a Top-Up pathway.
ATHE Level 4 is designed for students beginning their UK bachelor’s pathway. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
A GCE Advanced level profile with achievement in 2 or more subjects supported by 5 or more GCSEs at grades 4 and above
Other related level 3 subjects such as ATHE level 3
An Access to Higher Education Certificate delivered by an approved further education institute and validated by an Access Validating Agency
other equivalent international qualifications
Minimum age: 17 years

Learners will understand ethical, legal and regulatory issues relating to IT. They will also understand the impact of IT on society.
Computer Systems and Software 12 Credits Mandatory
This unit will develop learners’ understanding of the integration of hardware and software components. Learners will explore how hardware serves specific computer processing functions and investigate the use of various software applications.
Computer Programming 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will use different tools and techniques to design, implement and test programs, following the system life cycle
Relational Database Systems 12 Credits Mandatory
This unit will develop learners’ understanding of database systems and data analysis and modelling.
Software Engineering 12 Credits Mandatory
Leaners will gain an understanding of the need for Software Engineering and the different methods and techniques.
Systems Analysis and Design 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will be able to understand the systems development life cycle and the role of systems methodologies within the life cycle. Learners will be introduced to different fact finding and problem-solving techniques and they will use these to analyse an existing system.
E-commerce Applications 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will learn about different e-commerce models and applications and how they can be used to develop e-commerce in a small business.
Human Computer Interaction 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will develop understanding of principles and models of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). They will evaluate existing HCI design and principles and use this to help them plan their own prototype user interface.
Information Systems Theory and Practice 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will understand the benefits of using information systems to plan a project
Management Information Systems 12 Credits Mandatory
Learners will investigate different management information systems and evaluate the common features.
After completing the ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Computing (120 credits), students have two progression options:
Option 1
Continue to ATHE Level 5 Diploma in Law (the equivalent of the second year of a UK computing (Hons))
or
Options 2
Apply to universities for entry into Year 2
After completing Level 4 and Level 5 together, learners become eligible to enter the final year (Level 6 Top-Up) of a UK Bachelor's degree in fields such as:

1. What is the UK IT / Computing Diploma Pathway?
This pathway allows students to complete ATHE Level 4 & Level 5 in Computing (equivalent to the 1st and 2nd year of a UK Bachelor’s degree) and then progress to a Level 6 Top-Up year at an international university to earn a full BSc (Hons) Computing / IT degree.
2. Is ATHE recognized internationally?
Yes. ATHE is regulated by Ofqual (UK Government) and its qualifications are widely accepted by universities worldwide for academic progression.
3. Is Level 4 & 5 equivalent to the first two years of a UK degree?
Yes:
Level 4 = Year 1 (120 credits)
Level 5 = Year 2 (120 credits)
Completing both levels makes students eligible for direct entry into the final Top-Up year.
4. Do I need IELTS to enroll in Level 4 & Level 5?
Not required for Level 4 and Level 5.
IELTS may be required only if you study the final Top-Up year on-campus.
Most online Top-Up options do not require IELTS.
